Bay Area: 2019 Latinx Musical Highlights Summer Edition

Summer is going by fast, faster than Shakira can sing the bridge to “Ciega, Sordomuda”. And there’s a reason to worry. As a fellow concert junkie, let me tell you that summer is the BEST season to catch an Alternativo show en la Área de la Bahía. Not simply because the weather is nice and the days are longer but because everyone and their mothers go on tour for the summer. And if you  have not been to a Latinx concert, entonces que  esperas! [what are you waiting for!].  With the current Latin wave happening now in the music scene, more venues have picked up Latin acts than ever before. There are some many shows this summer, that we actually have options!! Already, artistas como Panteón Rococó , Jenny and the Mexicats, Alex Andwanter, & Ozomatli have made their way to the Bay and have left us with many good memories. Pero no se aguiten if you’ve missed these shows, there are many more line-up till the end of summer. With that in mind, here is a break down of some of the Bay Area shows on my radar to look forward to.

  • Atreciopleados + Bang Data @ Moe’s Alley (Santa Cruz) 07.26.2019Atreciopelados
Colombian duo, Aterciopleados, are back with new music and creativity. Start the weekend with classic alt-rock songs from this duo accompanied with local Bay Area talent, Bang Data. Mejor dicho you get to see dos tremendos artistas in one show! Yassss!

  • La Misa Negra @ The Ritz (San José) 07.26.2019

Que es mejor que una noche de cumbia!? [What’s better than a night of cumbia!?] Oakland’s 8-piece band, La Misa Negra nos trai musica para bailar y gozar [brings us music to dance and have fun to]. Expect a night of cumbia mixed with high-energy, Afro-Colombian dance music.

A friend once told me that its our responsibility to make our local artist better  by supporting them and adding pressure. So lets support our local artist!

  • Cuco @ Music in the Park (San José) 08.01.2019 Cuco
San José’s Music in The Park is a summer tradition concert series produced by San José Downtown Association. Each year they bring a refreshing line-up that’s sure to get you “muy excited.” Already, Ozomatli performed earlier this summer, next up is LA based indie pop artist Cuco. Catch internet phenom perform his modern pop hits with a touch of chicano vibes.

Mon Laferte

  • Mon Laferte @ San Jose Civic Center (San Jose) 08.13.2019
Current alternativo’s “it” artist, Mon Laferte (Chile), is on tour promoting her recent album Norma. With hit songs like “Amarrame”, “Amor Completo”, “Si Tu Me Quisieras” and “Caderas Blancas” makes Mon worth seeing live. Expect to loose your voice at this show, you’ll be singing along to most, if not to all, of her songs.

  • Deorro @ Pure Lounge & Nightclub (Sunnyvale) 08.16.2019Deorro
Deorro is one of the 1st top 40 electronic DJs that I knew off that incorporated his cultura into his music. I’ve seen this chico play at the 1st Los Dells Music festival. And it was an experience I would love to re-visit again. His set list was evenly balanced with Latin nostaliga y musica and EDM. Let’s hope this set list is just as lit as the one in Los Dells.

Little Jesus

  • Little Jesus @ The Slims (San Francisco) 08.21.2019
Little Jesus is on my list as a MUST SEE! I’ve have been waiting to see this band en vivo for a very long time y por fin los music gods me escucharon. There album, Rio Salvaje, is by far one of the best alternative rock album I’ve hear in recent years. Their strategic use of  experimentalism paired with pop rock will provide a delirious set of dance rock songs like “La magia” and “Azul”. And we can’t forget his 60’s influenced sing along anthems like “TQM”. Anybody looking to get into Latin alternative scene, this a good show to start with.

Sonido Clash

  • 4th Annual Sonido Clash Music Fest
@ School of Arts and Culture, MHP (SJ) 09.01.2019

Sonido Clash Music Fest is quickly becoming a new San José tradition. Expect three different stages showcasing an array of DJs, local artist and poets. There lineup boast an eclectic lineup showcasing different aspects the within the Alternativo scene from Nina Sky to Reyna Tropical to El Oms. Also be on the look out for live art, art installations, workshops, panel discussions, food, artist vendor market, children’s activities, y más!

  • Clubz con Girl Ultra @ Slim’s (SF) 09.18.2019
From this entire list, perhaps that most indie among the group is Clubz (Monterrey) and Girl Ultra(Mexico City). Get ready to hear a mixture of electro-pop, r&b, funk, rock, Spanglish y un poco de  80’s & 90’s nostalgia. Songs to look forward to live (if played) from Clubz “Templos”, “Áfrika” y “Popscuro” and from Girl Ultra “Ella Tu Y Yo” and ” Bye Bye”.  Count on hearing “Super Vision” being performed which is the collaboration between Cubz y Girl Ultra. One thing is certain, you can grantee that this show will take you back to a different time era. Did someone say #TBT!?!
